Was he? Look at what happened to Bilbo, holding onto the ring meant that he didn't age a day. Surely if Frodo had held onto the ring for long enough then he would have become like Gollum. We see the potential all through the film with him becoming more obsessive and selfish and as Blue Skelton says he does succumb to the ring at the end of the film.
