| Today is a good day Well, my patience finally paid off. For those that know me as a bit of a SciFi film anorak, they will be aware of my earlier (about 3 months ago) ranting and raving about the prices quoted for a certain film (This Island Earth). I was quoted various prices between $120 to $540 for the DVD version. I refused to pay that kind of money and have (quietly) been keeping an eye on the market. What a day! I managed to get a copy for $27.99 (used of course). Time and Tide waits for no man? Bah! Just call me Canute. Today, I am a very happy person Just thought I'd share that with the world |

The thing that really annoyed me about the previously high asking prices was that the copies were still wrapped in cellophane. The people hadn't even bothered to watch it - just bought it so they could make a mint. As soon as I get a film, the first thing I do is rip off the wrapper and stick it in the player. As far as I'm concerned, there's no point in buying a film just to stare at it on a shelf and hope that it makes you a quick buck. My film collection is based on love (and a few mistakes) not money. Okay...calm down...deep breaths....that's better. BTW you're right - it is a crazy wild film - one of my all time favourites.

| Re: Today is a good day Damn straight, Foxbat. It's right up there with "Forbidden Planet". I remember how exciting it was to watch "Forbidden Planet" in all its widescreen, digitally-remastered DVD glory!!!! Bloody marvellous!!! Sheesh, I'm jealous, I need a copy of "This Island Earth" on DVD too. I s'pose it's widescreen & all the rest?? Ah, sob sob... |

This is actually really strange because when Laser Disc was the top quality format, some of the biggest sales were of old 50s SciFi films. I still have many of these laser discs which, I suppose, now belong in a musem. But (back to the point in hand) you'd think that if they were a good seller on L/D then they might release it on DVD. Of course there is always the question of licencing - and that is the reason why many of these films are still unreleased on DVD. Still, we live in hope

| Re: Today is a good day Foxbat, you're not wrong about "This Island Earth" on DVD. You're lucky to find it! I found someone selling it for $675 bucks! Now that's just silly... Hey, you got a DVD burner? (heh heh)... I was going to say to you "Hey, I've got The Time Travellers!!"...but then I realized I've got the '76 one...not the '67 one...That's a Jap film, right? Sounds groovey. Anyhow, good luck on your hunt! |

| Re: Today is a good day I have the Laser Disc version of This Island Earth and, at one point, thought I'd be cheaper buying a DVD burner and transferring it over (believe it or not, I still have 3 working Laser Disc players in my posession - it was a case of- Hmmm, better buy a spare just in case I can't get this player fixed if it goes faulty. Then I thought: What if that one goes faulty too? Ergo 3) I'm a sucker for getting my hands on the real product so decided against the idea in the end. As for The Time Travelers (I spelt it wrong originally): It was a 1967 film (American) about a group of scientists who try to make a window into the future but actually succeed in making a door. It stars John Hoyt and has a really kooky ending where the film loops in on itself and replays the whole scenario from start to finish - getting faster all the time. Man! How I dig those groovy sixties effects |
