Stargate Fan Fiction What would we do without fan fiction? It\'s a way for those so inclined to add a little something of their own, answer a question that has been nagging at them that wasn\'t addressed in one of the episodes, or offer another glimpse into the people and

Ok.. not sure if i said this but the way talkstargate is going is it is part of talkscifi.com which is part of ascifi.com - the new scifi portal.
Ok, as well as the discussion forums the first new big thing we are going to do is a fan fic directory.

The way it will work:

-- It will be a directory, like Yahoo of fan fic
-- Each fan fic will be stored on the server so you never get 404 errors!
-- You can rate/review fan fics and discuss it in the forums etc
-- You will use your username and password from the forum to add, modify etc your fan fic.

Ok couple of questions:

1) Fan Fic Standard.

We need a standard for each fic.

I was thinking

1) Author
2) Author Email
3) Author Website
4) Disclaimer
5) Copyright
6) Spoliers
7) Summary/abstract
8) Part x of y if a series
9) The story

That is what i was thinking. What you think?

--

Would like some comments about this idea, any decent directories i can have a look at for ideas (this will not be just stargate but ALL sci-fi).

Thanks everyone.

I've got something like that started and it takes a lot of work. If you want to take a look it's at http://www.crosswinds.net/~gatedemon

Yes I realise but

Yes I realise but
The site would be made using a database which does everything automatically. I fact people can add their fan fic and I would never have to do anything, the pages are created automaticaly people review them automatically etc.

Of course i would have to add a few thousand to set the ball rolling but it would not really take that long - i certainly would not have to make a new page for anything. Everything will be organized into categories etc..

Databases makes it all so easy!

I found a cgi that does all of that, but decided not to use it. The main reason was that I don't know that much about cgi, and there weren't any off an on switches as to what people were allowed to upload. I didn't want a review section that was automatic because I wanted to be able to read the reviews before they were posted. Being able to write a review without it being seen first is giving an awful lot of power to the reviewer.
Fan fic writers are very personally involved in what they write and for most it takes a great deal of courage to post what they've written onto the web. There are too many people who don't know how to word a review in a constructive manner and only end up hurting even if that wasn't their intention. You're also opening up a way for some who might not like a particular writer to vent their dislike of that person rather than a good, honest review of the work. I've seen both happen on different mailing lists that are dedicated to fan fiction.

Just a word of caution.

Cheers,

The system can be set up so that I "review the reviews" first. It can also be set up so that this is not the case. The system will be linked to the member base of the forums so anyone who reviews unkindly can just be removed. I will probably set it up so that I review a members first couple of reviews and then if they are good they go onto automatic. It will be the same sort of set up for the actual posting of fan fic.

I thought of one more, rating.
What should I use?

PG, 15, 18?

I am going to set it up hopefully that when you register you have to give your age. You can then not access over 18 sections of the site if you are under that age. These sections would include +18 fan fic and also +18 forum sections.

You'll also need a way to verify that it is the author who is doing the actual uploading of the story. There have been instances that still occur when a story gets archived to a site without the author's permission.
As for ratings, most follow

PG, PG-13, R, and NR-17. You'll also have to decide if you want to allow slash fiction.

PG, PG-13, R, and NR-17
most of those are US ratings only, R for instance not many people would know what i meant in the uk.

we have

U, (universal)
PG,
PG-13
15
18

It is basically impossile to be 100% sure that the person who submits the fic is the author, but it will be made clear this is wrong to do and any instances will result in all of that person's submissions to be deleted instantly.

Most fan fiction writers follow those conventions already so I don't think you'd have to worry much. The only one I left out was Gen which would be your universal and NR-17 which was supposed to be NC-17.

FanFiction.net is exactly the sort of thing i was thinking about, wow that is a pretty good site. Ours would be sci-fi focused only. I think the category organizing and search features there need help but yeah.. basically it.

Thank you.
When we get this PHP and mySQL installed i will start asking people :-)

The idea is that most of the features we add can be looked after by lots of different people. The moderators for the boards, editors for the directory of sci-fi sites (like dmoz.com but better!), the reviews and submitters for the fan fic directory and news posters for the sci-fi news site.

Can't do anything unfortunatly until we get the good old server going.. pain !

Cool Fic directory

Fic directory? Do tell... :}

BTW: The format and standards listed above are the ones I've been using for 2+ years and have had no trouble with. Are you planning to limit 'story types', say ... slash?
