| resident pedantissimo | Re: from where it's hot and dry . . . Must be a dust cloud if it's hot and dry - El Paso? Yes, I remember. After weeks of everywhere in Texas serving us steaks, the promoter's wife made us a chile con carne to kill for. And another Bujold fan, to boot! I'll really have to get enough posts together on the "general books" section to get her her own "authors" slot (difficult, as dedicated science fiction readers are a minority here, but what worth while endeavour is easy?) Perhaps I'll attempt to get the lady herself to drop in; you know she's promised to write another "Vorkostigan" book? (not when, and I'm enjoying the "Challion" series, but still) Have you found "Winterfair gifts"? (I think that's right, though I haven't) If you hadn't already guessed, you're welcome. Ah, you'd thought so before but are now getting somewhat nervous? Understandable, but no worries, we've not lost all of a newbie for ages. Find your way around; next week it doubles in size. New building going on everywhere, you're just in time. And welcome yet again; please wax lyrical about grandchildren (assuming, of course, that the so merit ) |

Which authors do I like? That's a tall order, because I like a lot of different ones. Many of my current favorites are those crossover horror/fantasies, like Laurell K. Hamilton, Jim Butcher, and Charlaine Harris. I don't even know what genre those are called. I resisted reading the Southern Vampire series for several years, then finally gave up and read all of them in a week! I went through a period when I methodically went through all the "classic" lists I could find. I have outgrown snobbishness in my reading habits, and now just read what I enjoy, whether head candy or nutritious meal.

Ah, Ms. Bujold-I certainly hope we get more of Miles-he has quite a lot of living to do. I think I've read "A Civil Campaign" about 10 times. Her other books don't interest me as much, although I've read them. And yes, I did find Winterfair! I like both SF and F, but wouldn't call myself a hardcore SF fan. I do read a lot of fantasy, and am glad to see a resurgence in interest in it recently, propelled, I think, by the LOTR movies. Besides classic writers like Heinlein and Herbert, I like David Webber and Elizabeth Moon (both her fantasy and SF). I do like the Viehl books, as I saw recently mentioned here. I would also like to take the opportunity to recommend Steven Gould's "Jumper" and "Reflex" --both excellent! Grandchildren? 4 girls, 1 boy, and an unknown to be born next Spring. All wonderful. In fact, one of the girls is named Rahvin from the RJ books (never mind that Rahvin was a bad guy, and male--they just liked the name).

*Ducks the inevitable flying chairs at that remark*I've read quite a bit of her SF, but I prefer her fantasy. I thought Paksenarrion trilogy was stunning.

| Re: from where it's hot and dry . . . New posts button? (confused) I see a "today's posts" link--is that what you are referring to? Also, what's the difference between the General Book Discussion subform in the Books and Literature; and the SFF Lounge in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Forum? (double confused!) |

| Re: from where it's hot and dry . . . GBD is for any general book discussions ie non scifi or fantasy SFF lounge is a general scifi&fantasy talk don't worry about starting threads on the wrong forum as the mods are good and will move them if needbe. On the main board the buttons seem to have dissapeared but if you go to a thread they should appear on a bar near the top starting with user CP new posts is the 5th along and gives the most recently posted threads |
