Re: Why is Harry Potter so popular?

I think HP is so popular because we can relate to him, and even though the setting in which he lives is completely unrealistic, the manner in which he lives is very realistic.

I love magic and thrilling adventure, too. And HP has it all. We love you Harry!

Re: Why is Harry Potter so popular?

I think Harry Potter is so popular because on one hand, the several, intertwining plots of the books makes them complex and gives the reader a lot to think about, and on the other hand, there are characters in the book that everyone can relate to. I also think it has to do with the fact that Harry, while he is one of the greatest wizards to ever live, is also very human, and we can all relate to him. He may be a strong wizard, but he also has faults, such as the fact that he is stubborn, and is a mediocre student, but his faults make him seem more real and more human. I am a lover of all kinds of books and movies, and I would place Harry Potter up there as one of my all time favorites, right next to Lord of the Rings.

Re: Why is Harry Potter so popular?

The genius of the Harry Potter series is very much down to it's characters; they have been created fantastically.

Dumbledore's humour adds a friendly touch to the traditional "omni-powerful mentor". Harry's parents have just died, everywhere is in chaos and, in mid conversation with Prof.McG he offers her, quite randomly, a sherbot lemon..

Snape: an amazing character. How can one character spark so much debate?

Sheer brilliance.

It's the hero's journey, just like Star Wars or King Arthur (also popular!). Plus it has humro and fantastic marketing.

Well, I think I've finally caught up to your most recent posting.... Just wanted to welcome you to the Chronicles, Valerie. Glad to see you're jumping in and participating, and hope to see more of you around here. Drop by the Tea Room sometime when you feel like either conversation, camaraderie, or contending with various forms of lunacy (water-balloon fights, pie fights, dragon birthings, what-have-you). And there's also an introductions forum if you wish to go that route and introduce yourself to the rest of the loon... er, members here....

Re: Why is Harry Potter so popular?

I'm a 35 year old mother of two and I absolutely love HP. Its a form of escapism for me. I've got the books so far and the films . It just helps to get away from the stuff life throws at you.(for a short while anyway). While reading you get so involved in what Harry and his mates get up to. I can never put the books down and am always eager for the next instalment.
