Which of these King books should I read?

I have determined that my next book will be a Stephen King book. I've read one before, and can't recall the title "The Girl Who Loved (some baseball player)" I liked it enough to finish it, but that was about it.

Anyway, here's what's available in our staff library:

Bag of Bones
Cell
Dreamcatcher
Hearts in Atlantis
Wolves of the Calla
Song of Susannah

I need to know today, (July 21) so I can grab one for my weekend bus/ferry travels.

And please, none of that "I enjoyed Bag of Bones, especially the part where the Doctor MacHernia turned out to be a remote-contolled cadaver."

Your honest advice is much appreciated.

If you've read the Dark Tower series through Wizard and the Glass then continue on with Wolves. A solid book out of the series and it will bring you to Song of Susannah one of the better books.

If you haven't both Wolves and Song of Susannah aren't going to make a lick of sense to you.

People are split on Cell. Personally I hated it, but a lot of people did like it.

Hearts is alright, but not great.

Is it a supernatural story, or more of a Stand By Me kind of thing?

I'd go with Bag of Bones or Dreamcatcher. I've read them both and liked them, Bag of Bones especially.

Have yet to read the Dark Tower books and was not very impressed by Hearts of Atlantis.

Read 'Hearts in Atlantis' first Paige, its a great read, its more of a 'Stand by me' sorta story, with a little bit of supernatural, plus it will help you when you read the Dark Tower.

Re: Which of these King books should I read?

There is actually 5 different stories in Hearts.

The first one Low Men in Yellow Coats is loosely related to The Dark Tower, but not enough to be an issue if you haven't read it. It is far and away the best story out of the five.

In all honesty the only reason I'd recomend the book is the first story. The second, Hearts in Atlantis is somewhat of a drudgery, and the other three are short and unremarkable.

Sweet Jebus Do not pick Dreamcatcher. I give it a 5 star Ughh. Just an opinion not putting down anyones taste.
I thought Hearts in Atlantis was one of his better books.

Of those above that I read, Bag of Bones was my favorite. (IMO)

Read wolves of the Calla, skip song of susannah, then read the Dark Tower.

Dreamcatcher was very good. I never read Heart in Atlantis because the movie made me bored. Extremely bored.

Also, I would check out some of his books as Bachman...some of those are really good...creepy but good.

Just read Bag Of Bones eh? Considering you havent read any of the first four dark tower books(at least I assume you haven't) you dont have many options with the last two on the list. Bag Of Bones is long enough to keep you interested. Or else Dreamcatcher. The other two are good but too short, you'd get through them in a day I'd say.

Re: Which of these King books should I read?

I love Hearts in Atlantis and I LOVE the second story in it. No supernatural elements but it has some of King's most heartfelt writing. You can see that the shadow of the Vietnam war in the US was a big thing with him and it must have been something of an emotional experience for him to write about it.

Re: Which of these King books should I read?

I seem to be way late, but just to throw in my two cents --

Wolves of the Calla and Song of Susannah shouldn't be read without the rest of the series. In fact, it's weird that the library has them and not the others.

Out of the others, I've read Bones and Hearts. I'd say Bones was better. I liked Hearts a lot, but Bones I just loved.

Yes.......a believer. Bag of Bones was excellent but I still don't think Dreamcatcher can be beaten. Not from what I've read anyway. If they ever get that in, then you have your book.
