So who's looking forward to the second part of this story? You couldn't wish for more Cybermen Vs Daleks.

28.13: Doomsday

End of the season finale.

Daleks. Cybermen. The Doctor and Rose. Jackie and Pete. Mickey. And did I mention the end of the season.

Seemingly sharing half the season's budget with "Army of Ghosts" this episode resumes with the four Daleks discovering they are surrounded by an army of Cybermen, and vice-versa. Fans' dreams of pitting the silver against the gold are quickly realised with the first foray soon spreading to all-out inter-species war.

Much action, mostly decent SFX (though the Confidential suggests the producers and crew think more of them than the screening gives credit: have they not watched shows such as Stargate SG-1 to see how budgets on firefights can be spent and look more realistic and larger) and a mostly plausible conclusion to the invasion problem. Real emotion at the end, of course, much predicted, though the Doctor escapes have to say aloud those three little words. Even if he clearly meant them.

I noted, apart from the arrival of the Bride for the Christmas special (it was within the episode, so no apologies for the spoiler... blame the producers  ) that at least one of the Spiro secret society "original" Daleks seemingly escaped to a temporal shift. On the opposite side, whilst the millions of Cybermen who came across the void apparently went back, should that have happened to the newly created ones, such as Yvonne?

Btw, the Cybermen did not 'go back' they were sucked into the void with the Daleks. The void being a nothingness in between realities. (or Hell as described)

But your point about the new Cybermen is valid.

.....Presumably the end of the Cybermen?
.....At least the Dalek escapes

Re: the last episode??? realy???

Only the end of the current series.

Nothing wrong with it as far as I was concerned.

The last section was a tie-in to the Christmas special called "Runaway Bride"

Top marks for spotting that nit. You are perfectly right. None of the newly created Cybermen should have been sucked into the void, only things that had at some time crossed into other realities and picked up that swirly green stuff that the Doctor could see through his cheap 3D specs.

Speaking of spoilers, my children left me this episode recorded on a video subtitled 'The End of Rose'. I thought the will she/ won't she die was done well, though once I knew she was leaving it didn't really bother me that much. Or does 'Am I bothered?' come in the next episode. Technically, she is dead - reported as dead and no longer existing in our world.

Can the Cybermen and Daleks exist in 'The Void'? If so, they could feasibly be brought back at any time. However, the necessity of the Daleks requiring a 'Void Ship' makes me think they will die there.

The Runaway Bride (2006 Christmas Special)

INT. TARDIS - Day

The DOCTOR realises there is someone else in the TARDIS, their back to him. They are in full bridal gown.

DOCTOR: What?

The woman, DONNA, turns to face him and SQUEAKS in surprise.

DOCTOR: What?

DONNA: Who are you?

DOCTOR: Wh...?

DONNA: Where am I?

DOCTOR: What?

DONNA: What the hell is this place?

DOCTOR: What?

TITLES for the Christmas Special.

DONNA: Answer me? Where am I? What is this place?

DOCTOR: This is the TARDIS: Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. The last time-travelling space ship in the universe. And, as you can tell, it's larger on the inside than the outside. Impressed?

DONNA: Am I bovvered? Eh? Do I look bovvered?

The majority of the episode, I loved. For the second time ever, I loved Jackie and Mickey. And Jake, yay! I wondered where he'd gotten to. Even Pete didn't bug me as much as he normally does.

Daleks vs. Cybermen was camper than I'd imagined, but the banter was absolutely hilarious.

Dalek: Identify yourselves!
Cyberman: You will identify first!

And the Daleks got some great lines - "This is not war, this is pest control", "You are superior in only one respect - you are better at dying", "Social interaction will cease".

Other things I liked - the 3D glasses have a purpose! I'm glad, because the randomness wasn't quite so cutely random after 2 episodes. "Khan". Hee. The Doctor kissing Mickey on the head was very cute, as was the 'A4 paper of surrender'. The Doctor's face when Jackie tells him to shut up. The references to Bad Wolf and Skaro (but not Gallifrey? All the times the Doctor's planet gets mentioned, why is it never named?) The Doctor's madcap dashing about, grinning ear-to-ear, "we're in mortal peril but isn't it fun" kind of attitude that we haven't really seen since Nine. I've missed that.

But whilst there was plenty of good stuff, there were also plenty of gaping plot holes. Why did CyberYvonne keep her emotions when none of the other Cybermen did? Why did the lever move all by itself, but not when it had 8 stone of person hanging on to it? How did Pete know to come through at the exact second to rescue Rose?

I'm also upset about the non-death of Rose. It was such a cop-out. Rose didn't die in any sense of the word. Saying she 'died' in her world, fair enough. But she can't stand in the parallel world and say, "This is where I died", because it doesn't make any sense.

And then my biggest gripe - RTD ruined a great episode by ending it with the mushiest, most sickening goodbye scene ever. It had none of the pathos of the goodbye scene between Nine and Rose, it was just cringe-worthy. Why couldn't the episode have ended with Rose and the Doctor leaning against the wall, then the Doctor walking away? That was a good ending - it was sweet, it was sad, and it was final. We knew Rose was in the other world, we didn't need to know if she lived happily ever after or not.

But it could still have been salvaged. Tearful farewell, everything resolved, happy families.

Rose: Doctor, I love you.
Doctor: Quite right, too.

That was sweet. Right there would also have been a good ending. We know she loves him, he accepts it and brushes it off with a joke. That's fitting. But then you get the Doctor within a hairsbreadth of saying "I love you" back, and that's just wrong. Of course he loves all his companions, but saying it in that way implies that he was in love with her, and that goes against everything that Doctor Who should stand for, in my book. And since there's only news of one female companion for series 3, I suppose it's going to be the exact same situation all over again? *sigh*

But that ending was fabulous. Some people have said that it was silly and retracted from the emotional goodbye, but it was random and hilarious and I loved it. I just hope that Catherine Tate doesn't annoy me in The Runaway Brideas much as she does the rest of the time.

Oh well, only 170 days to find out. Roll on Christmas! :rolly2:

Re: the last episode??? realy???

it's a cliffhangar ending. the xmas one will continue straight off

the only problem i had with this episode was the ridiculous and rathe rboring talk between jackie and pete in teh corridor. im sorry, but when you're being chased by robot men who want to take out your brain, and you have darlecs flying around, you can save the reunion chat for later

good episode tho. makes 4 out of the entire series that i liked

Re: the last episode??? realy???

Personally, I think this was one of the doc's finest hours.

As for Jackie and Pete..two people seperated by universes and death...no wonder they stopped for a chat and a cuddle. I think I'd have done the same and hang the Cybermen and Daleks

Faery; it's all about pacing a story and having emtional content the audience can relate too. When the "enemy" comes again into the plot, you have even more for your characters to lose. Each softer moment tightens the tension when danger threatens. It also give more layers to the characters, mkaes them "real".

Look at any news footage of a real life disaster. People are often intent of finding their loved ones, not fleeing the scene, even when the danger is coming towards them.

So no more Billie Piper. Personally I'm happy with that as I could never get her pop video out of my head every time I saw her.

Isn't that the point - he didn't say it? Though he was clearly about to...

Absolutely fantastic last episode! Loved every minute of it! I think it's a shame that Billie Piper was written out cause she was a great co star.
