Re: Jolly good July reading...

l think it's really new. I've seen two paperbacks and one out that is still only hardbound. I think people that are big fans of greek mythology and the like would really enjoy this one. In the first book we meet merlin way before he ever met up with Arthur and it turs out he has a very long lifespan and was actually one of Jason's Argonauts only he went under a different name at the time. Sometimes with stories I can see where a plot is going etc. but with Robert Holdstock's Celtika, I really haven't a clue what's around the next corner.

Re: Jolly good July reading...

I was wrong, it looks like there's only two Merlin books out, Celika and The Iron Grail. Holdstock has lots of other books I've never heard of. Looks like expanding on mythology is what he's in to.

Couldn't hold out any longer. Just started reading Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver. Boy oh boy can this guy write, I've not had this feeling about a book/series since I started on R. Scott Bakker and futher back Erikson. Having a Science background I'm really enjoying the variuos refrerences and insights into some of the pre-eminent scientists of the time.

I can relate Gollum, I really enjoyed Quicksilver too. I actually have the third in that series in my to read pile, just haven't gotten to it yet.

Will start reading the third in the Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy, Ptolemy's Gate today at lunch.

Re: Jolly good July reading...

Was away on a 3 week vacation and managed to get some things read: Glen Cook's last Garret book - Whispering Nickel Idols. Reread the first Malazaan book and read the second one. Also read three juvenile books by Heinlein "Between planets", "The Star Beast" and "The Tunnel in the Sky" PS: Interesting the text formating seems not to work for me at the moment so sorry about how this looks

Finally started Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. I don't know why I waited because I am loving every word so far.

And welcome Gaston to the wild and wonderful board.

Re: Jolly good July reading...

I have most recently been reading The World Wreckers (Darkover) by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Druids by Morgan Llewelyn. I'm reading both at once by alternating chapters. I'm really enjoying both!

Well, I've liked all three stories (mostly done with Ptolemy's Gate now) but I was getting a bit antsy as the Mandrake became so unlikeable...but I really enjoy his style and the footnotes especially. My conversations are generally so full of footnotes that I quite often derail my own train of thought, so it is very familiar to me and makes it feel much more realistic.
