As for the gravity, I'd imagined some kind of device that generates gravity on each floor of the station individually (although I'm pretty hazy on the details!), using electro-magnetic thingumies... I don't know, they seem to get away with it on Star Trek!
I think I'd imagined the space stations being built out in space in a hurry, `switched on' and then just left.
I take your point about the`weight' issue of the atmosphere, sometimes I get a little carried away with my descriptions and they can trip over themselves a bit!
