Re: what kind of downloading tools do you have I think that was some wry humour on Thunderchild's part ![]() Perhaps this thread should be moved to the general lounge where we can have a discussion on the merits of filesharing. (Or not).

Re: what kind of downloading tools do you have Azureus for all my torrent needs, and Soulseek for all my music needs. Soulseek is great, because I rarely have trouble finding obscenely rare music when I use it. Those two things are all I really need.

Re: what kind of downloading tools do you have I don't use p2p much, but I do use newsgroups a lot. I use torrents occasionally for bootlegs and linux distros. Anyway, a rundown: P2P BitTorrent Gnutella, including BearShare, LimeWire and Morpheus. I've never used any of these so can't comment on how good/bad they are, except that some of the official clients are supposed to include spyware. FastTrack, the main client of which is the infamous Kazaa. Heavily targeted by the RIAA but still has a couple of million users apparently. WinMX, has not disappeared, though the company that originally ran the network has. I used to use this a bit because it had great chatrooms. eDonkey2000, main client being eMule. Direct Connect, uses private and public hubs, I don't know much about it beyond that. Soulseek, smallish network used almost exclusively for music. There are other networks but these are the main ones (at least that I am aware of). Since you already use BitTorrent, I won't bore you with a discussion about breaches of copyright and I know very well that all these networks can be used quite legitimately to share non-copyrighted files, but there are other dangers. Kazaa is notorious for the number of viruses (virii?) and trojans masquerading as other files, never mind being targetted by the RIAA. My advice is simply not to use it. Also, with Gnutella in all it's guises, a lot of the clients contain spyware. I personally wouldn't go near either Kazaa or Gnutella, if you do, do a bit of research and use a non-spyware client. Non P2P IRC, main client mIRC, I don't use it so can't comment beyond the fact that many groups and organisations maintain an IRC channel that they use to disseminate up-to-date information. Usenet (newsgroups), absolutely brilliant resource on every subject under the sun. Not just files - there are more text groups than binary groups. I'm sure there are others as well.

Re: what kind of downloading tools do you have Wow, Kazaa hasn't died yet? What a shame. Anyway, if you really want to use that network, try to find the Kazaa Lite client. It's discontinued, and no longer downloadable by the creators, but it covers a lot of the standard Kazaa client's shortcomings. Plus, no spyware! As for Morpheus, it feels almost exactly like Kazaa, if I remember correctly. The two could've been twins.
