I'm a lot like Talysia, in that I need quiet to write, but actually a lot of the writing goes on in my head throughout the day. When I sit down to write it's more like transcribing the scene that I've worked out in my head. So that can be done directly into the word processor. I write with a pen and paper quite often as well, but sometimes, what I'm writing is a lot of background stuff - details about a character, how they look, their history, or details about a place, the description of a transluminal interstellar ship, etc. and then I'll work those details into the story as I go along.
