That could have something to do with the program you use to read it. For me, there is a huge difference between reading .pdfs in Adobe Reader and say Microsoft Reader or Mobipocket. The latter render the fonts much better and have pages that resemble a real book. Try getting a free sample of an e-book and one of those programs to see for yourself; just scrolling through a document in AR makes the book seem endless, very close to how you described it.
