Brick (2005)

"Brick" is the refreshing first time directorial debut of Rian Johnson.
It's the story of Brendan, a high school student who discovers his ex-girlfriend murdered in a storm drain.

What follows is an interesting twist on the film noir detective genre, as Brendan goes round investigating the reasons for the killing and more importantly, who pulled the trigger.
The dialogue is fast paced and laced with it's own unique 'slang' words which firstly put me in mind of Clockwork Orange though the film itself plays out more like a Sam Spade novel.
The film gathers together the standard cast of femme fatales, muscle & twists and double cross but never feels recycled or unoriginal.

The script always moves along and never feels padded and the film doesn't suffer from the lack of 'big name' actors - although several of you may recognise Lukas Haas from such classics as Witness and Solar Warriors

Go and watch this movie if you liked:
The Maltese Falcon
Double Indemnity &
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

My Rating: A fine, fresh slant on the film noir genre. 8/10

re: Brick (2005)

It's an independant film from America.
It did very well at the Sundance film festival over there.
Won the Special Jury prize for originality as I recall.

I saw it last month, it is an excellent film, good writing/directing/acting and has a really unique feel to it.
