Yeah, the Thomas Covenant books by Stephen Donaldson have some similar elements to what you're talking about. I really didn't like the series myself, though. Maybe the Spellsinger books by Alan Dean Foster?

I'd definitely agree with avoiding the 'it was all a dream' angle. Maybe have him know the whole time that he's tripping, but feel compelled to explore the new world nonetheless. Perhaps the fact that he knows it's not real could allow him to act in a way that he normally wouldn't - be more courageous, outgoing etc.? Or perhaps it could give him 'magical' powers as he finds he can influence the fantasy world to his will? Perhaps he becomes a power for darkness, thinking it doesn't matter because it's not real?
