After the success of The Hobbit, publishers were falling over themselves to publish LotR...IIRC, it was at a fairly advanced stage of being issued by Collins, but they had cold feet about the length...and when they pulled out, Unwin snapped it up.
So perhaps the formula is to have a runaway success with a children's or YA book...then get your blockbuster in on the back of it. |
