Re: Ask your publishing questions here

For those of you reading this, I'm sorry to say that this way of 'announcing' yourself only says one thing to a publisher or agent: trouble.

Re: Ask your publishing questions here

Just to add to this thread - a string of junk posts by ThomasTye have been removed and the member has been warned.

The 15 post rule before being allowed to post a URL is a basic anti-spam measure, and anyone here who attempts to circumvent that by filling the forums with junk posts will be warned or even banned.

ADDED: Apologies for anyone who was subscribed to this thread, as the URL has now changed due to the way that I had to edit this thread.

Re: Ask your publishing questions here

Thanks, Brian. Unfortunately, ThomasTye shows exactly why being self-centred is actually self-defeating. I know that UK publishers (not just SF and Fantasy, either) occasionally check out this forum, and they'll have taken note of his name - for all the wrong reasons, as Steve Savile said...

Re: Ask your publishing questions here

I guess it simply emphasises the point about being professional in your approach.

chronicles is frequently targeted by people looking to simply get attention to their book or website, but anything seen as "forum spamming" can only be frowned upon.

On the other hand, I'm happy to help where I can where someone approaches me with a polite request to highlight their work/book-signing etc - and there is a press release section being developed precisely to create a focused outlet for self-promotion. More on coming changes later.

Re: Ask your publishing questions here

There is a critique section under aspiring writers for just that purpose, just read the posting guidelines first (length is sometimes an isuue ).

Re: Ask your publishing questions here

I think all of us that have been on the "net" a long time have said things in haste, or even anger on forums. The written word can sometimes be so unclear as to what we mean. We don't have the body language to back it up. It is hard to gauge what a person is really saying in some respects.

I know I have sometimes said things I have later regretted and know full well things on the net last a long time, and can, and do, come back and bite you in the bum.

What I am trying to say is that any specialised forum can and does benefit from having professionals in the field on the boards. People like John and Steve who go out of their way to help others and share their knowledge. It behoves the members to show such people the same mutual repsect they would to anyone, to be welcoming and friendly and to know when to back off and not intrude. That sadly is one of my big worries, that I waffle far too much and intrude way too much on people's time and patience.

Re: Ask your publishing questions here

Being a mod on a few other sites and having my own, I would have to say that if ThomasTye were to post there, in the same manner...instant permaban. I have no tolerance and no patience. Attitudes like that belong on myspace.

Good job Brian.

Thank you for your answer John, I figured as much. I am going to contact you, and others, eventually.....just not quite there....yet.

But I must say, after a 6 month reprieve from this, and a few other, sites, I am extremely glad to have your brain around for us to pick at.

/me gets fork.
