British SF on Radio 4

For those of you in the UK, or able to get BBC radio on the internet, I note a new four-part series about British SF beginning on Thursday week, the 22nd, presented by Francis Spufford, who was a guest at the Blackpool Eastercon a couple of years ago.

11.30 am, Radio 4, IMAGINING ALBION.

I wish I was in the UK, I love radio plays. Not too many out here in the North West US though...Its all country music, no plays.

Ah, no, it's not a play. It's a documentary series, starting with H G Wells and going through to present-day SF in the UK, featuring interviews with authors...

Sounds interesting, and might actually be able to listen to it.

Hm, I wonder if they'll broadcast it online?

I think you can listen to any BBC radio broadcast online, live. Or if you miss your favorite show, you can listen to it again online. Check here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/schedule/2006/06/22/day/

That sounds great - I don't think we have a radio in the home.

Brian, your computer is a radio if it has speakers. (and I know you have one of those!)

Quite interesting little show this morning. All about utopia this week, next week invasion, which should be good.

Damned, missed it, but can't find an archive online?

All I find is a text overview:

Re: British SF on Radio 4

Easy, Brian. Go to your link, click on 'listen again' on the left, look for the 'choice of the day' on the right and click on 'imagining albion'. Hey presto, you get to listen to it again. You need the real player plug in to listen. Quite straight foward, hope it helps.

Listened to it last night. Was joined half way through by the youngest daughter, as she is doing "The Handmaid's Tale" for her A2 exams, she thought it would give here some hints about dystopia, anti-utopia and how it is shown in literature

Re: British SF on Radio 4

Another interesting edition this morning. Brian Aldiss, Chris Priest, China Mieville and others...

On to Michael Moorcock and J G Ballard in next week's thrilling episode...worth catching, if you haven't yet done so.

Re: British SF on Radio 4

"In the 1960s, JG Ballard and Michael Moorcock rebelled against the rocket dreams of much contemporary science fiction, and chose instead to explore 'inner space' - the darker recesses of the human soul."

"Darker recesses of the human soul" - ooooh, can't wait!
