That is a better explanation than any I had thought of. I guess I was assuming that if Bran and Rickon both survive then Bran would still be Lord of Winterfell.(since during ACOK he was still Robb's heir despite already being crippled) Clearly if Bran cannot reproduce he will have to pick an heir, and if Rickon survives and has progeny, problem solved. But I see no reason why this couldn't be accomplished with a sisterson.(unless Arya and Sansa both meet fates that preclude children, and I don't think they will
both die) This gave me the impression that Rickon had some other/additional part to play in resolving the story.
However, saying Rickon is included as the last scion of House Stark makes much more sense than any of my crazy theories, and makes me worry for the lives of Arya and Sansa. Or maybe GRRM just wants a son of Eddard to inherit Winterfell, and the girls are safe.
Edit: And yes, Jaime is awesome. I think it is because he does what
he thinks he should, and not what anyone else thinks is right.
