Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

At the risk of assuming moderator powers what I don't have, Ian has his own section of the forum, where you can ask him questions:

Ian Whates - Science Fiction Fantasy Chronicles: forums

Probably best not to take this thread too far off-topic

No worries - it's easy to get sidetracked!

RJM, if you're still interested in the answer to this, the process is explained in fair detail in a recent interview with me that's just been posted on Keith Brooke's blog: Ian Whates interviewed all things keith brooke and infinity plus

Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Hey John. Seems as though you're busy busy busy. Just wondering do you have a no reply policy if not interested?
Just wondering as it has been a few months since I sent you an email. I don't know if you have read it or lost it as I have heard of problems of emails from Yahoo to BT,

Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

I'm not a spokesman for Mr. Jarrold, but a query I sent him once got no reply. However, my submission (which was rejected, alas) did.

Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Oh okay. I sent him a Query plus submission. So maybe he just ignored it because of that? Maybe I should send only a word file?

Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

My guess (and it's only that) is that the volume of stuff Mr. Jarrold gets sent is such that it's easy for bits and pieces to go missing. I doubt he deliberately chose not to reply, he's probably just busy and it's either in a to-do list or has been misplaced.

Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

I'm glad John takes e-mail submissions.

Over the weekend I decided to print off my manuscript. Well, what I had so far.

I'm currently 37,000 or so words in and have it written out in 12 point double-spaced Courier font, and the page count currently stands at 172 pages. But despite only being about a third of the way in I was shocked at the thickness of the manuscript. It's about an inch and a half thick. Is this normal?

I know Courier does tend to spread things out a little when compared to Times New Roman, but even in TNR I'm still looking at a sizable collection of pages.

If things carry on the way they are I'll be needing a horse and cart to ferry it around. I just hope I never have to post it anywhere, it'll cost a small fortune.

Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

@anthorn - John definitely doesn't have a no-response policy. I checked with him at AltFiction (on someone else's behalf) and he said he is currently taking up to 3 months to give a response as he's very busy. However he also said to nudge him after that if he hasn't replied.

@FlugelMeister - yes, a double-spaced manuscript in Courier will be very thick. My printout for the (incomplete) manuscript of my last novel filled two lever-arch files!

The good news is that very few agents and editors want the full ms by snail-mail these days. Some still ask for the initial submission that way, because it discourages those who aren't serious. All my dealings with Angry Robot have been electronic (appropriately enough!).

Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

That's a relief. Thanks, Anne.

On the subject of communication with John. I emailed him last month on the subject of editing and submitting a manuscript and he responded within an hour. Of course, he may have had some rare free time to enjoy.

A lack of response could simply be down to the e-mails being dumped in the junk mail box. Try another mail service.

Re: "Personal" question(s) to John Jarrold

Mr Jarrold is going to judge your book by itself alone.

Query letter, synopsis, typeface, and so on will matter much less with him than with many other agents.

But your work better be really excellent or you should keep it and work on it some more before sending it off to him because, as someone else said in another thread, 'good' is no longer good enough, the entry level now is 'special' ...
