Re: What we're reading in June...

So far this month I've read a couple of mysteries and

*Eldrie the Healer* -- Claudia J. Edwards -- mediocre, #1 in a series that never continued
*Winter Warriors* -- David Gemmell -- fair, very similar to other Gemmell books
*Signs of Life* -- Cherry Wilder -- good, her books were always understated but I liked them!
*Across the Nightingale Floor* -- Lian Hearn -- very good (wonder if she read *The Paladin* by Cherryh?); will read the rest of this series!
*Cowl* -- Neal Asher -- good, enjoying it almost as much as *The Skinner*

Looks like it'll be another good reading month!

Angels of Death by william Marsden and Julian Sher about the Hells Angels on an iternational level. An excellent read if your into the true crime type of books.

Re: What we're reading in June...

Just finished Irving's Tales of a Traveller -- a few scattered bits of the supernatural, mostly whimsical, but occasionally hints of something darker, and all very well written; quite enjoyable.

Up next: King Rat -- China Mieville

Picked up Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" - had it a couple of years but never felt like reading it.

Was a little uncertain at first but enjoying it - like the overtones already.

Watch that third step -- it's a lulu! Just a warning: the book changes gears down the line; may take some readjustment. But it still asks some very interesting questions. And (if you've read the other) can you spot the connection between this and Heinlein's Beyond This Horizon? (Anybody else up on that one?)

Re: What we're reading in June...

After a first abortive attempt a couple months back, I have once more started in on Bakker's much vaunted The Darkness That Comes Before. I've gotten further than last time, so that's a start. Not totally engrossed, but it's not so bad, I guess, if a little confusing. Though that seems par for the course these days....

I tempted with buying that on Monday, but instead I got Dune. I've heard too much about it to pass up the occasion.

Re: What we're reading in June...

Today, the postman brought the fifth volume in the Trigan Empire Collection, The Three Princes, by Don Lawrence and Mike Butterworth. These are beautifully produced volumes of Lawrence's Trigan Empire strip from Look & Learn magazine. See http://www.triganempire.co.uk

Re: What we're reading in June...

Finished Roger Zelazny's "A Dark Travelling" - still pondering about this one, to me it seems a bit pointless story
Tonight finishing (probably) M. John Harrison's "The Pastel City"

Well it does start a little slow but I've read all of the current 7 books published in Wurt's Wars Of Light and Shadow. I love the prose but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Will be interesting to see your take on this mate. Not as good as Perdidio Street Station or the other 2 books in his main series but an interesting take on the pied piper story.

But this is Wolfe. I don't expect it to be a straightforward good vs evil tale.
With Wolfe it never is, part of what makes him such a great writer. Interesting comparison with Anderson, I've never thought of that comparison before...

You're a very lucky person let me tell you, it doesn't get much better than that....
