Oh, no doubt, if I was talking without the umbrella of anonymity I would keep an eye on diplomatic phrasing. My goal isn't to tell you or anyone else how publishing should work (I know far too little about it to do that!) -- My goal is to understand why it works the way it works.
(I probably could have phrased it better in the post above, but I'm flipping back and forth between this and an article on using MyYahoo as an RSS Feed reader, so I am a little distracted!)
Personally, I would have no problem continuing in a single genre. I write multiple genres now because I write what comes to me and sparks my interest. I also work on multiple books at the same time. (Well, one book at a time, but I switch books between drafts.) But I wouldn't submit a fantasy book unless I was willing to do fantasy exclusively.
It's just good to know the how's and the why's so I can keep it in mind. It helps me to decide what to do with the lone science fiction book I have written -- and likely to be my last science fiction book. I'm no science fiction writer, even if Stranger in a Strange Land is one of my favorite books of all time
