Well, well: toys-out-the-pram, or a legitimate reaction to unfair criticism?

Toys out of the pram. We've known for years that half of them should be wearing light blue and the other half hoops.

It's a prime qualification at Park Gargens.

On a lighter note, we won 3-1.

Refs are always going to make mistakes and with the art of hindsight gifted to managers, the media and supporters, by way of television, they are going to attract bags of criticism.

There's one of two ways out:

1) Give refs the advantage of TV replays
2) Take TV replays away from everyone else

Or make sure the man in black is neutral. An impossibility in Scotland.

It's amazing how much injury time is played if the Bigot Brothers need an equaliser or a winner.

That's a given, Ace.

The problem that we have with refs now isn't that they make more mistakes but that now the mistakes obvious to the general public because they all watch TV.

When Celtic or Rangers are involved, they aren't mistakes.

Mistakes are forgiveable.

Ah. What we down here call Ferguson Time - the extra time they add on so Man U can get a late, late winner.

Yeah, but it's been going on in Scotland for as long as anyone can remember.

The players must be close to getting their state pensions by now.

It's the refs that are getting old and blind, UM.

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

Pyan, Fergie time seemed to work rather well for Everton this year. But as an american fan of the EPL, and a fan of Utd (yes I apologize) any match I watch with friends where 4+ minutes are added on (barring a stretcher), the responce is: "Since when did SAF start managing club x?"

But I find instances of preferential officiating more evident in cards. For example Paul Scholes could quite honestly draw a yellow on 50% of his tackles. I cannot say how many times I have said: "Player name" if you weren't on Utd that would have been a card. But, all of the big 4 get peferential treatment. I think this is an issue related to all major sports though as the more successful teams "get the benefit of the doubt".

So that being said.... what does the ref do in the Rangers/Utd game wednesday.

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

That shouldn't be a problem, WS. There'll be a neutral ref. from another European country.

This one really only surfaces in domestic games.

There was that case last January:

Quote:
"I didn't expect that performance, it was shocking. I've no complaints about the result," said Ferguson.

But he did complain about the lack of injury time added, describing the five minutes as "an insult to the game".

He questioned referee Chris Foy's timekeeping and stated: "That is an insult to the game and the players out there."
BBC Sport - Football - Sir Alex Ferguson upset by 'shocking' performance

Only five minutes? Hardly gives Man U a chance, that...

Fergie, of all people, should know how it feels. As Aberdeen boss, he was on the wrong end of such decisions often enough.

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

To Ace: I know it will be a European Ref, was just trying to make light of the discussion of 2 out of 3 of the teams being discussed.

To Pyan: I remember, and I am suprized SAF gets away with some of the things he does say in the media without reprecussions.
