Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

They're all football: Soccer, Aussie Rules, Union, League, Gridiron, whatever.

To be a bit more parochial, I see Owen got off to a successful start with ManU:
Quote:
Michael Owen marked his first appearance for Manchester United with an 84th-minute winner in a 3-2 victory over a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur.

Owen, who came on as a second-half substitute, reacted smartly to slot home a loose ball after Zoran Tosic had been upended in the penalty area.
Quote:
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted with Owen's contribution.

"He's different from our other players, he's always searching for space, he's always in and around the box. He reacted well for his goal," he stated.

You'd have thought they might have turned out if only in relief that Sven wasn't taking over.

Strange, or what?

I suspect he'll be there just as long as Sheik Abdullah Bin Saeed Al Thani is there, and not a second longer...

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

Well....

Sheffield United sell both Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker to Spurs for 8million (reported price). With Walker coming back on loan for the season apparently. A good deal for 2 players that have played 50ish first team games between them. A shame that both of them had to go though.

Players in:

Lee Williamson - Been injured all pre-season so can't comment. Could be a decent signing though.

Kyel Reid - signed on a free after being released from West Ham, so far he has looked very, very good and I think he will play a major role in our up coming season providing Blackwell plays him in position on the wing. Very quick, strong and can pick out a pass with both his left and right. Something very few players have.

Andy Taylor - Signed from Tranmere, still only young. Looks slightly "raw" still but has plenty of time to improve and I reckon he will adapt nicely to Championship football providing he is given the chance. We'll see.

Ryan France - Just signed. Saw him today when I went to Bury for a friendly. Looks very comfortable on the ball, making good passes and challenges. I reckon he will be a good signing.

Keith Treacy - Signed on loan for 6months from Blackburn, officially a left winger. Came on at Bury today but struggled to get involved. I'll reserve judgment for him.

Glen Little - Nothing is official with him but his "trial" was up before the Bury game but he played today so assuming he's going to sign permanently. He has a calm head on him and allthough he's getting on a bit he knows how to spread the ball and pick out a pass. May be an important player for us if he does sign.

Ched Evans - A big signing for us. 3million is alot of money, but if he can get us 20goals then it's money well spent. Looking forward to see'ing him in action and fully expect him to do well for the Blades. Heard good things from Man City fans I have spoken too but with the situation the way it is there he has no chance.

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

I've got fond memories of Glen Little - he's an old Clarets player from the Stan Ternant (and Chris Waddle *shudder*) years.

Sorry about you getting Treacy on loan - you can never trust a Blackburn player.

And no, I wasn't one of them.

Things are just going from bad to worse to...well, embarrassingly awful, to be frank. We got turned over 6-1 away to Leyton Orient today. As NUFC.com put it: Yellow shirts, red faces.

Sigh.

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

Don't worry, Till - you'll definitely have a good start to the new season.

Indeed, your beating them in the first game could halt the Baggies' promotion campaign in its tracks! Or even better, set them on the path to relegation!!

I wonder if we have any Baggies fans on the boards?

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

I suspect we may find out...

I just wish the sale of the club was done and dusted. Right now we're in a position where we're losing players but can't replace them. The way things are going, we'll end up with about a dozen players for the start of the season. And no full-time manager. And only about 30,000 turning out for each game (yep, season ticket sales are slow - people are waiting to see what happens before handing their cash over, and I don't blame them).

Hey Till, are their any rumours around your end on the Blades loaning someone from you guys.

The main rumour on this end is Alan Smith.

Not heard anything much, I have to admit. Be surprised if we loaned Smith out, though; he's one I'd expect us to sell, assuming someone makes a bid for him.

He's not too bad. He'll definitely develop quicker in the Championship rather than the Prem.

The way he is right now, he's out of his depth in the Prem.

Just heard the sad news that Sir Bobby Robson has passed away. A true gent, and an absolute legend up here, he'll be sorely missed.
