Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

Yeah, a draw would've been the best result for Chelsea today, but sod it - it's just too funny!

Now I just hope Chelsea can keep ahead of that pesky unbeaten team right behind them

Not a hope. We'll run you down on our way to second!

Or not.

Oh, but then again, QPR have just scored...

EDIT: Um...what in the world is going on today? 6-1 to City, and now Chelsea losing 1-0 and down to nine men? Eh?

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

I don't usually pass comment on games I haven't seen live but I'm absolutely stunned by today's result.

Having been a City supporter all my life (first game in 1953) I've learnt that, first and foremost, City usually shoot themselves in the foot. So when United scored to make it 3-1 my first thought was 'it's going to be 3-3'. Then when City scored to make it 4-1 in the 90th minute my first thought was 'when was the last time United score 3 in extra time?' But, instead of United scoring, City scored twice more in injury time.

That's twice in consecutive games (VillaReal on Tuesday) that City have scored in extra time. It's a long time since City had the grit and determination to do that. Maybe there's a fundamental shift taking place. On the other hand we may lose to Wolves next week.

And the moral of the story? Never laugh at another team until your result is in the bag.

Seven yellows and two reds. I didn't get to see the game, but from the sounds of it the 9 players left played their hearts out and might well have won it. The consensus seems to be that the ref ought to have been wearing a rangers shirt today.

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

Haven't seen the highlights yet, but from what I heard on the radio Bosingwa's red card was a little iffy, Drogba's was absolutely nailed on. I don't remember there being much said either way on the yellows, other than the odd "how many is that now?" comment. That being said, it did sound like the nine men outplayed QPR for a fair bit, and that Lampard should have had a penalty. MOTD2 will have to be watched tonight, methinks.

Good day for City, Spurs and *ahem* the Toon. And we didn't even play...

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

Yeah that's what I've heard from the radio and read on a few forums. Always disappointed with a loss, but given how furious Man United fans are at their team's lack of fight, I can only be annoyed.

And for what it's worth, I really like seeing Newcastle up there! Especially if it helps keep Arsenal out of the top four

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

You know, one of the things I've really enjoyed with the Toon so far this season is the never-say-die attitude we seem to have. In recent years, when we've gone a goal down in games the players too often seemed to wave the white flag, but not this season. It gives me hope that we'll do well, though it's tempered by that annoying thing called realism.

The next couple of months should be interesting, anyway. I don't suppose we'll get more than three points in November (we should get something at home to Everton, but the other three games...not so much), but in December I'd be disappointed if we didn't pick up a fair few. With any luck, we'll still be in or around the top six by new year, and then maybe pick up a player or two to strengthen the squad. We'll see.

Oh, and I did like Pardew's comment yesterday: "we've played some champagne football, but not today. Today was more like flat bitter." And this after a win...

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

Wolves 2 - 5 Manchester City

What a strange game that was!

Wolves started very strongly raiding at will down both wings and putting in some excellent crosses that had our defence at sixes and sevens. Wolves deservedly took the lead with a cross from their right that ended up in the back of the net without our keeper moving an inch.

Then, mysteriously, they seemed to forget how to cause City trouble and City slowly got into the game and finally dominated the midfield. City scored 3 times before the break and I'm sure that was as much a surprise to the City fans as it was to Wolves.

After the break Wolves still seemed unable to remember just how they had dominated in the first 20 minutes and, despite scoring one more, City scored twice.

One encouraging thing about the game is that City played a couple of their academy players and on in particular who came on as a sub, Dennis Suarez, looks to be an excellent prospect.

Don't worry, Chopper. It won't be the same City team that turned out tonight.

Hey Chopper, what's your view on Mick Mcarthy?

I think he's on borrowed time. Made a big mistake calling his own fans mindless, after getting stick from some of them.

Re: Football (Soccer to those across the pond)

he's been on borrowed time since we made the premier league

more seriously, i like him. i think, even if he's not the best manager in the world, at least he's a damned good honest one. and i'd rather listen to him than to some of the spoilt brats at the top of the table. the problem is that Wolves fans reckon that now they're in the PL they shouldn't lose any games (cf, Man City, Man Utd...). and Wolves ain't one of these clubs with a whole arab nation (plus oil) backing them. the fans do have short memories - wasn't so long ago we were capable of losing 6-0 to Southampton or drawing 21 games in one season.

McCarthy has built up a good, solid squad and he deserves full credit for taking the team to the PL and keeping the squad intact (again, cf those jackdaws City, Utd, etc - who can afford to have whole teams of talent sat in the reserves rather than let the opposition have them).

i have solid proof for all of the above: please click here to view it.

Agree with Chopper. Great respect for McCarthy.

Damn you Chopper, I actually followed your link and had to watch Mick grinning at the camera for a couple of minutes before I turned it off.

Quite an impressive grin though.
