Re: first book

You were right the end was very good. The second half of the book was so much better than the first like it wasnt even the same book. After about 200 pages i was getting annoyed by the story but suddenly it became totaly different and really awesome.

Not at like the first 200 pages where i really struggled to keep reading.

I want nothing more than to read the second book right now but i have a couple of books to read first.

I was starting to think today's epic fantasy wasnt for me after Feist,Martin,Hobb but Erikson impressed with the skill he told the story and the twist and the characters was interesting.

If the other books are as good or even better than the second half of Gardens of the moon than i will enjoy this series alot

Erikson's books do tend to be lots of buildup introducing characters and setting up conflicts and then everything all coming together at the end.

Guess who's bizzack! (hip hop listeners will know what im on about)

yeah i just picked up deadhouse gates after a long drought of not reading and now im 25 pages deep, with three thoughts distracting my mind:

1)i have to hand in my maths homework tomorrow, which should have been in two weeks ago, but my excellent persuasion skills and charm managed to prolong the deadline...i guess tomorrow will really test my charm lol...how do i explain to my teacher that i was too caught up in a book to do the work lol?
2)why did i stop reading for a long time?
3)i need to visit the fantasy forum!

as you can see they, and the fact that my bladder is about to explode, have finally ripped me away from my blissful reading spell lol

ive been good thanks, how have u been?

could someone PM me a small summary of gardens of the moon? i can remember it but only vaguely

Re: first book

A small summation:

I just finished the first book. I generally find audio books if I can but the recommendations of this were outstanding so I tried it. I did really like it but I wasn't really into it until page 300 or so like some have stated. The first part is clunkily written. He is so busy inventing nouns that it is distracting. Forgetting all of them didn't hurt the rest of the book for me.

I'm not sure why fans of this author need to put down other series. I'm not that thick skinned and when people feel the need to berate things you enjoy it doesn't put you on their side or make you want to share opinions with them.

My subjective rating is better than the first couple series of Feist books, maybe below a few other epics but not many. I've just finished the one book so my ratings are subject to revision.

Re: first book

I also just finished GOTM. The climax and end was WOW, pretty good. I got the second book but because it took me quite a while to get through GOTM, I will take a small Erikson break and read a couple of other quick reads before taking it on.

I have to say that may favourite characters so far are: Rake, Paran, Kalam, Quick Ben and Kruppe. I also thought the portrail of Coll, Crockus and Whiskeyjack to be very good.

Bloodnguts: I don't think you can generalize and say that fans of this author need to put down other series. I am first and foremost a fanatic of GRRM's ASoIF series as well as Erickson and unless the series is Jordan or especially Goodkind, I see no need to put down other series. Intriguing name for someone that is not very thick skinned .

Re: first book

I came to this part of the forum to see if others were finding the same things as I am. Apparently some are. My sister's boyfriend gave me Deadhouse Gates to read when I visited once as I hadn't brought a book to read. He hadn't finished it because he found it confusing. So I read it, and loved it, and then spent months trying to find book one in the series. Seemed all the book stores had the rest of them but not the first, and I kept forgetting to look it up online.

I honestly thought that the first book would explain all the things that I found confusing, having started with the second book.. and I was wrong. He jumps right into talking about backstory like I should know it, warrens are popping up all over and characters are bringing up specific warrens like I should know what they are and how they work. Hardly any of the characters from book two are even mentioned in book one!??!

But I guess that is his style. I was pretty impressed when a lot of the backstory was explained by Mammot to Crokus, and I felt like I was a pupil right along with him.. going oooooooooooh, that's how it went.

I did find in book one that the relationships between certain men and women were stilted and didn't make a lot of sense. I think he has really grown in style since then.

I'm now starting Memories of Ice and am thrilled to see 'my' characters again, and not even much time has passed.
