Re: Balrogs and Wings.

Not another Balrog Wing Debate thread?

It is so I will post what I think.

The earlier ones do and the later ones dont because it is definate that the one in Moria in FOTR has wings and that Gothmog didnt.

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

I first read these books some 20+ years ago, and have read them several times since.

And I never once pondered on the "Balrog Wing Question", lol.

I feel like a fair weather fan now.

I do have to say that the original article was, if nothing else, pretty interesting.

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

Just something to add to my thing earlier. They can't fly either way so does it really matter?

Of course they have wings. Just ask Peter Jackson.

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

What if some Balrogs had wings, and others didn't?

This is a passage about Melkor and he corrupting the Balrogs to be his servants:

Quote:
For of the Maiar many were drawn to his [Melkor's] splendour in the days of his greatness, and remained in that allegiance down into his darkness; and others he corrupted afterwards to his service with lies and treacherous gifts. Dreadful among these spirits were the Valaraukar, the scourges of fire that in Middle-earth were called the Balrogs, demons of terror. Among those of his servants that have names the greatest was that spirit whom the Eldar called Sauron, or Gorthaur the Cruel.
The Silmarillion, Valaquenta - Of the Enemies.

Just bear with me... Lets say some of those "treacherous gifts" given by Melkor were wings... That meant some had wings, and some didn't.

All speculation of course, but hey, what if!

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

Well it is stated that Gothmog doesnt have wings and that the one in Fellowship does. So some do and some dont (or they have one in the middle of their back).

Durin's Bane had wings? How can you be so sure about that?

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

Well in The Fellowship Of The Ring it says something along the lines of big shadowy wings behind it. I'll quote tomorrow.

I know what you´re going to say, but that really is the point of arguement. Read here first: http://www.chronicles-network.com/fo...tml#post184789

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

But why would wings be such a lure to Maiar that would follow the dark Lord for the sake of having some.

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

Well, wings look impressive, flying seems handy... I´m not sure though, I never been a Maia...

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

Looks aside why would someone like Saruman or Gandalf desire wings? It makes no sense if all it gave them was the power of flight and after making the decision and going to join the Dark Lord it would seem that the Balrogs never used those wings to fly. Seems like a lot of give up for the sake of shoulder decorations.

Re: Balrogs and Wings.

But I´m not saying the would only get wings. I´m sure the Dark Lord would promise them power and what´s not.
