| Re: who do you think will come out on top? Snaga, I'm assuming you mean after all seven books have been published.
I think Cersei, Jaime, and Myrcella are not long for this earth, err, I mean that earth. If the Lannisters fall... wait, scratch that... When the Lannisters fall from power, I could envision someone, i.e. Ser Daven, Strongboar, or Josmyn Peckledon escaping with Tommen and fleeing into exile just like Willem Darry saved Viserys and Daenerys from Dragonstone.
I do not see Kevan going down with Cersei's ship. He knows it's better to survive and try again later. He knows the old song... what's it's name? Ahhhh, yes, The Rains of Castamere. I look for Kevan to make cause with the new power and to be rewarded as Lord of Casterly Rock.
Stannis is an old done man. His sword is false. Aemon's interpretation of Dany's birth is better than Stannis'. Heck, even Aegon's and Rhaegar's births have better signs than Stannis. Melisandre has spiritually leeched Stannis. He may very well heroically face off with THE Other, but he's dog meat.
Asha Greyjoy is already in survival mode, ala Kevan Lannister. I think she'll come out of this alright. She'd rather serve as Victarion's Hand than be dead.
Aemon is blind to the political realities around him. Euron will bring another Faceless Man for him... or arrange some other suitable end for the prophet.
Euron is evil. He has the horn, but Dany will not allow her dragons to just be taken from her. He has risen by blood. His rule will be excessive in blood, debauchery, and torture. He will never have a loyal enough base to rule the entire Seven Kingdoms. Crow's Eye is crow food.
Theon is a worm.
Victarion has a decent chance of surviving as Dany's Master of Ships.
As long as Littlefinger stays ahead of the curve by correctly guessing his opponent's moves, he'll be a major factor. Lies, hostages, bribes, legal documents, and using the honor of other players to immobilize them has served him well. But what happens when someone decides that they no longer need what he's giving... remember how Tyrion finally threw off Tywin's yoke. And someday, Sansa will no longer be his hostage if he marries her off... she'll be her own player. As with Euron, Littlefinger does not possess a large enough loyal base of swords to ensure a long stay on the Iron Throne.
Doran Martell will soon die of his illness.
Quentyn has the best chance of securing an alliance with Dany. He has a small fleet. He has the nearest secure landings. His family has been loyal. His sister was betrothed to her brother. He has been groomed to rule as a subordinate lord to the crown. And it seems that he left for Slaver's Bay ahead of Victarion, Marwyn, and Loras.
Arianne may indeed succeed her father. But the lords of Dorne will take a strong hand in her government or replace her with Tristayne. Arianne is another Cersei. She's wanton and headstrong and yet not patient nor wise. I'd say she's a disaster waiting to happen, but she's already started to happen.
As for the Tyrells, I cannot see how Margaery could pull off another switching of kings. I think she's tied to Tommen now. If Viserys was still alive, mayhaps the Tyrells would prove Tommen's abhominable origins and offer Margaery to the Targs. But since they are dealing with Dany, mayhaps they are offering Loras... or Willas. Just like Arianne was secretly promised to Viserys, mayhaps the Tyrells will claim that Willas has been secretly promised to Dany. Either way, Margaery will be dead or relegated to a role as counselor to House Tyrell... much like her grandmother.
All the Tyrells might perish with the downfall of the Lannisters and the arrival of the Targaryens. Then again, they might prove traitorous and switch sides. All in all I think, Garlan has the best chance for survival. Mace, as patriarch, will be slain by vengeful Lannisters or by a vengeful Stannis. As long as Loras leads from the front while dressed all in white, he's a target for everyone. Willas will not go near the fighting, but he's a cripple and easy to target with an assassin. Garlan has taken Brightwater Keep, so he'll not inherit Highgarden... he seems slightly more prudent than Loras... and he is dynamite with a sword, so he'll not be easy fodder for assassins. As with Kevan and Asha, I think Garlan can tell which way the wind is blowing.
Mance Rayder has the shortest potential life span of anyone in ADWD.
In almost every other fantasy/sci-fi/fiction that I've read, the Jon and Dany characters always win. They survive against all odds. They are young and beautiful and wise... their kingdoms flourish under their beneficence. Except this is GRRM were dealing with here... three characters similar to Jon and Dany have already died! Ned, Drogo, and Robb were all handsome and noble and capable lords. Yet they're dead.
Just going by that measure, I want to say that neither Jon nor Dany will end up ruling from the Iron Throne. Yet after saying that, I must acknowledge that GRRM has invested a lot, and I mean a lot more into Jon and Dany than he ever did into Drogo, Robb, and Ned. And they seem to fit the description of Ice and Fire.
I cannot discount neither Jon nor Dany from ending up in control of Westeros.
I think I read somewhere that GRRM sees much of himself in Tyrion. If this is true, then I guess that Tyrion will survive to the end. Will he rule as a head of the dragon, will he serve as Hand, will he end up on the Wall, will he wind up as a Fool, will he inherit Casterly Rock, or will he end up a beggar in exile? I can't say.
I do think Sansa will not only survive, but thrive. If she's not Queen, then she'll be the King/Queenmaker. |
