| Editors I don't know if this was discussed before, probably has, so mods if you don't mind, and be so kind, to please just merge for I cannot find a similar thread. I am looking for info on Editors for hire. People who I can email my work to for copyreading/editing/corrections/critiquing my work before I present it to publishers. I have already presented a basic storyline of the story I want to publish here and so far I got good vibes and I'm going to pursue it, I know that Chris gives good advice but I feel like I would be abusing him if I post the whole story here and not pay him for the services. Do any of you have any info about this. |

| Re: Editors Avoid www.scribendi.com. www.book-editing.com seems to have many competent editors, but they charge high prices. Right now I'm thinking of working with the editors at www.authorassist.com. Good luck! |

| Admin and Tea-boy | Re: Editors This *may* be useful: http://www.chronicles-network.com/fo...-services.html However, you may find it better to approach John Jarrold, a pretty major freelance editor in the UK (I believe he won "best Editor" at Worldcon this year), who also happens to be a member: http://www.chronicles-network.com/fo...n-jarrold.html You will need to make sure you have a manuscript to be edited, and also determine whether you're looking for general editorial appriasal, or more in-depth line-editing - don't simply send an idea. I would recommend that if you're really serious, to see about a chapter of editing from someone like John, who would likely be able to warn you if you've steered into any general pitfalls. |

| Ink-stained Wretch | Re: Editors Do make sure, when dealing with free-lance editors, that it is someone with genuine experience like John Jerrold, because there are a lot of people who will charge you to do what you could do as well or better yourself. And I like what Brian says about having the first three chapters done, rather than the whole book, and an editor who will discuss your mistakes, not just correct them. When I made my first sale, that is almost exactly what the acquiring editor did: she line-edited a few chapters (with a few explanations of what she was doing and why, where it wasn't self-evident) and then said, "this is how it's done, and now that you know how it is done, go through the rest of the manuscript and do it yourself." Because eventually you do have to learn how to do these things on your own. If you sell your book and the editor asks for revisions, you can hardly bring a third-party editor in at that point to do them for you. |

| Re: Editors Hi there! Just to say that anyone approaching an editor to work with them on their novel should investigate them fully, whether it's me or anyone else. Google their name, check out websites, talk to authors with whom they have worked where possible. I do entirely understand that there are scam merchants out there, and it's important that writers avoid them. You're spending money - spend it wisely, and DON'T spend it unless you are 100% happy to do so. John Jarrold |
