Some good news in these days in which we’re more accustomed to reporting about the premature closure of sci-fi shows rather than the arrival of fresh meat.
Syfy has just announced that it has three new scripted projects on the boil, under development by Universal Cable Productions, CBS TV Studios and Fox TV Studios respectively.
The new series are entitled Ghost Projekt from CBS (yeck for the name, anyway), Seeing Things from Fox and an untitled Robert H Wolfe project from Universal Cable.
The latter sounds the most interesting to us, being set in space where after a long conflict, an organisation called the Unity Democracy is formed. This bands together a diverse mix of humans and “trans-humans” aboard a starship which is sent to bring law and order to worlds afar.
Of course, the potential for inter-racial explosiveness is going to be one of the main thrusts of the story. It sounds intriguing, with a bit of Star Trek and Stargate Universe perhaps thrown into the mix.
Fox’s Seeing Things is a tale about a cop who dies a violent death and becomes a ghost. He must close his last case, but can only do so with the help of a socially backward chap who realises that the hallucinations which have plagued his life might actually be real.
Not hugely original, no, but still we won’t write it off just yet.
The final offering, Ghost Projekt, is drawn from a comic series, a supernatural thriller. It features a female KGB agent and a male US weapons inspector who are thrown together to face a “deadly force” which escapes from a research laboratory.
There could be some mileage there, although we admit, we’ve not read the comics.
Hopefully at least one of the new shows will be a corker, and will make it past a second series.
