The Secret World developer diary video released
The Secret World is an upcoming MMORPG from Funcom, the producers of Anarchy Online and Age of Conan (which recently went free-to-play).
And it’s a massively multiplayer title which has quite a few online gamers hot under the collar, as it sounds quite different from your run-of-the-mill MMOG in some respects. Even if the title is rather nondescript.
The setting is a modern day one where three secret societies compete to dominate each other. These are the Illuminati, the Dragon and the Templar – each of which are detailed in a new developer diary you can take a look at on YouTube.
The Dragon are the Asian based faction who advocate chaos and creating destruction throughout the world, and the Templars are Europeans out on a brutal modern day crusade against those they view as evil-doers.
And the Illuminati, based in the US, are the unseen puppet masters who move using power and wealth.
Players must work their way up through the ranks of their chosen regime – probably partaking in rituals where they’re blindfolded and slapped with haddocks – to uncover various conspiracies across the globe.
Strategic sites must be fought for, such as Stonehenge, the owner of which gains a powerful magic force. Yes, there aren’t just guns but swords and fireballs on offer here.
There are also persistent warzones where upwards of a hundred players can battle each other to control various objective points.
Those societies who achieve victories apparently change the world permanently for their followers, and everyone else, of course.
Other interesting elements include a freeform system of character progression which sounds very flexible, although Funcom hasn’t released much in the way of specifics as to exactly how this will work.
The Secret World should be launched on the PC at some point next year, and will be published by EA.
