Remember Rentaghost? If you were a child of the seventies, you’ll probably find it hard to forget the kids’ TV comedy show about a bunch of ghosts who could be hired out for hauntings.

Jester ghost Timothy Claypole bumbled about the modern world, failing to get to grips with it all, and Nadia Popov who would sneeze a lot and, well, pop off when she did so.

Believe it or not, if you hadn’t already heard, Rentaghost is set to be remade as a Hollywood comedy.

Although initially word was that Russell Brand was to be the central character of Fred Mumford, who plays the employer and organiser of the various ghosts.

It seems, however, that Brand has decided the Renta-reboot is not to his tastes, and now Ben Stiller has been linked to the role, at least according to Deadline.

Mumford won’t be deceased as he was in the original kids’ TV series, rather he’ll be very much alive, an American sent across to take control of a British company which is going down the pan.

And presumably the reason it’s doing so badly, he’ll discover, is due to hauntings and other such supernatural caperings.

Apparently it’s 20th Century Fox which will be spiriting up this old ghost of a series, and not Warner Bros who originally had the concept of Brand being the driving force behind the resurrection.

We have to admit, we’re interested to see how this one turns out, despite the obvious potential for disaster here. It’s likely to start production at some point next year, with a release date possibly in 2013.

  1. End of Line says:

What ever happened to the classic comedic patnering of Stiller and Owen? In my own humble opinion, they were comedy gold.
