James Cameron has been chin-wagging about the sequel to his 3D alien epic which wowed some, and left others distinctly underwhelmed.

We’d already heard that Sigourney Weaver was set to return in her lead role. Although quite how, exactly, has never been clear seeing as she died at the end of the original Avatar.

Never fear, however, Cameron was on hand with a wry smile and some possible explanations about how the story of Avatar 2 is going to shape up and make sense.

He was quoted by STV as saying that no one is truly ever dead in a sci-fi franchise, unless “your DNA is expunged from the universe”.

And even in that case, there’s always the old standby of time travel.

Cameron also said: “Have you ever heard of nonlinear storytelling? A lot happens on the planet before she shows up, and before Jake shows up to join her. She’s there for 15 years ahead of time.”

So we might be looking at a prequel, or at least a film with prequel elements which perhaps spreads itself over the timeline.

Whatever we’re looking at, you can bet it involves large precipices, huge forests and a lot of cool glowing insects. And this time round, water, and lots of it, as he plans to explore Pandora’s oceans.

Avatar 2 is currently slated for an end of 2014 release, and Cameron’s planning on shooting some of it at the deepest point of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific.

The deepest location on Earth, in fact, which will only be reachable with the construction of a very special and doubtless very expensive submarine. There’ll be some pretty spectacular creatures down there anyway, we’re betting.
