New Vernor Vinge novel out in November
Due for release in November is a new novel from Hugo award winning author, Vernor Vinge, published by Tor.
Nearly ten years ago, Ravna Bergnsdot and a number of human children survived a disaster that almost obliterated the human race and ended up on Tines World.
The pack animals that are the Tines and Ravna have survived a war, and Ravna has saved more than a hundred children who were in stasis aboard the vessel they escaped in.
Whilst the Tines are peaceful, there are those that seek power and are determined to gain it no matter what the cost – and some of the humans are just as bad as the few power-hungry Tines.
The fledgling civilisation that has flourished since the humans landed is now at risk on a world of fascinating wonders and terrifying danger.
Vernor Vinge has created a powerful sequel of adventure and discovery that will entrance the many readers of the award-winning “A Fire Upon the Deep”.
Filled with the inventiveness, excitement, and human drama that have become hallmarks of his work, this new novel is sure to become another great milestone in Vinge’s already stellar career.
Excerpt from The Children of the Sky:
“Two years after the Battle on Starship Hill”
“How do you get the attention of the richest businessperson in the world?
Vendacious had spent all his well-remembered life sucking up to royalty. He had never dreamed he would fall so low as to need a common merchant, but here he was with his only remaining servant, trying to find a street address in East Home’s factory district.
This latest street was even narrower than the one they had left. Surely the world’s richest would never come here!
The alley had heavy doors set on either side. At the moment, all were closed, but the place must be a crowded madness at shift change….

Anticipates our future like nobody else. –Gregory Benford

“A major SF author…you can see Vinge maturing from clever competence and slick storytelling to something rather special.”
“A near complete collection of Vinge’s short fiction.”
“Vernor Vinge’s stories and novels have always surprised and entertained me, and “The Children of the Sky “carries on that grand tradition!” –Greg Bear, bestselling author of “Hull Zero Three”
About the author:
Vernor Vinge is the only writer in science fiction history to win the Hugo Award for three consecutive novels and five Hugo Awards in total.
He has also won a Hugo for the novella, Fast Times at Fairmount High, which is included in this edition in its first British publication.
Vernor Vinge s career stretches back to the pulp magazines of the 1960 s and he introduces each story with an account of how it came to be written, a fascinating personal insight into the most celebrated career in contemporary science fiction.
Consistently through a career of 40 years are the bold and challenging ideas, re-imagining how technology can enhance and endanger humanity, brought to life with compelling storytelling.
Vinge was the first writer to imagine the concept of cyberspace and his themes of artificial intelligence and technological singularity (where technology develops to the extent that we cannot even speculate about its consequences) are even more important today than ever.
The Children of the Sky is due for release on the 14th November and is available now for pre-order on Amazon.
