Kalypso has unleashed a new trailer for its upcoming naval merchant adventure game, Port Royale 3.
Set in the 17th Century Caribbean, where the European naval powers are fighting for supremacy, the game casts the player as a young Captain eager to prove his worth in the new world.
The campaign allows for two different paths for the player to follow, that of adventurer and trader.
The adventurer type will swashbuckle and conquer their way to victory, using raids, collecting bounties, even resorting to piracy and plunder. And saying “Arrr” quite a lot, most likely.
Whereas the trader will prefer economic nous as a route to victory, developing cities with production facilities and setting up trade routes. While reading the Guardian, or the 17th Century equivalent, perhaps.
Or if you fancy a bit of both, the sandbox mode will apparently let you indulge in simultaneous conquest and trade, combining both as you see fit.
The trailer itself (which you’ll find on YouTube) shows a cut-scene of a pirate ship boarding an English vessel, although is disappointingly bereft of a peek at the real game itself considering it’s expected to be out in six months time.
Real world locations and a deep economic simulation are promised, as well as a number of mutiplayer modes alongside the single player options.
We’ll reserve any sort of judgement until we’ve seen a bit more, although we must admit, we’re partial to a bit of piracy on the high seas.
Port Royale 3 sets sail in the second quarter of 2012 on the PC, PS3 and Xbox.
