Contagion tops US box office on debut
Contagion has gone straight to the top of the US box office chart upon its release.
The thriller is directed by Steven Soderbergh and the cast peppered with stars, including Marion Cotillard (of Inception fame), Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Winslet.
It’s a virus disaster film, one of many, although a good one by all accounts if the critics are to believed, and the audiences given how many people flocked to see it.
Contagion took $23.1 million, the same as the next four films combined, leaping in front of The Help which was pushed down to second place with $8.7 million in receipts (in its fifth week now, though).
Contagion comes out in the UK in just over a month, October 21st to be precise, so prepare your surgical masks for an outing to the cinema.
In the UK box office chart, the Inbetweeners flick continued with its third week at the top, pulling £3.7 million for a total gross of £35 million.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a distant second to the comedy film, only managing £1.08 million (with total receipts of £18 million over four weeks).
Final Destination 5 sank to number six in its second week, followed by two disappointing debuts at number seven and eight for Fright Night and Apollo 18, which only managed £700K and £500K respectively on their opening week.
The latest Harry Potter film took £450K in its eighth week, nestling just behind the pair.
Apollo 18 had a disappointing performance at the US box office, too, but it took $9 million on its debut and at least grabbed third place in the top ten.
