Since Games of Thrones hit the TV screen, the gritty fantasy series based on George RR Martin’s writing has become massive news.

Season two is due to hit home soon, this autumn in fact, and to coincide with that Focus Home Interactive is publishing a PC game.

Developed by Cyanide Studios – who are familiar with fantasy trappings, having ported the RPG board game Blood Bowl to the PC and consoles – Game of Thrones: Genesis has now had its release date confirmed.

It’ll be out as a boxed copy and for digital download on September 29th. As the name suggests, the strategy game covers the period preceding the start of the book/series, with the player representing one of the eight major houses of Westeros vying for the Iron Throne.

Diplomatic wheeling and dealing plus the inevitable back-stabbing will be a central part of the game, just as it is in the book.

While you can conquer territory by military might if you wish, apparently it will be possible to win without raising an army at all, purely by using all the dirty diplomatic tricks at your disposal. From assassination to kidnapping and ransom, secret alliances and spy missions.

Cyanide claims this is a first in a real-time strategy game, and they’re probably right.

George RR Martin has apparently been consulted in scripting the single player campaign, and Game of Thrones: Genesis will also boast an eight player online mode. Get ready to do battle in just three weeks time.
