Here’s a game which will take you back to the likes of the Eye of the Beholder, Wizardry and other retro step-by-step dungeon crawlers.

Except the Legend of Grimrock – which will be available on PC, Mac and iPad – doesn’t look half as crusty as those efforts did in terms of the graphics.

And you can see for yourself, as the first gameplay trailer has been revealed showing the party exploring the usual mysterious underground chambers filled with secret passages, monsters, traps and of course treasure.

Have a gander at the footage here. The environment is nicely realised, the giant snail looks suitably slimy, and the sound is very atmospheric.

Even the spell system, which seems to be based on rune combinations, looks pretty nifty. This is one adventure that could while away some serious train journey time on the old iPad.

In terms of the plot, the main character is apparently a prisoner sentenced to death, a punishment carried out via exile to Mount Grimrock. However, if he can survive the deadly labyrinth, there’s a chance of escape… not to mention of discovering long lost artifacts and civilisations.

Developed by Almost Human, the Legend of Grimrock is still a work in progress and looking for a publisher, with no release date yet confirmed. It’s definitely one to keep an eye (of the beholder) on, though.
