From Dust might not be a game you’ve heard of, but you’re about to hear more about it soon.

Published by Ubisoft on Xbox Live Arcade today, and on the PC next month, it has been described in many interesting terms, perhaps the most interesting of which is the spiritual successor to Populous. With some Black & White thrown in – so very Molyneux, in other words.

Although it’s actually been created by Éric Chahi, who was responsible for Another World, the critically acclaimed cinematic platformer of the early nineties.

From Dust lets the player become a God who can shape the landscape at his or her will, the idea being to keep a tribe of people safe and advancing their civilization.

Natural disasters such as tidal waves and volcanic eruptions must be guarded against lest your poor people end up drowned or burned to a crisp.

The game is described as “a modern god game where nature is the star”, and you can get a good feel for it from the launch trailer which has just been unveiled here.

It looks very tasty indeed for God game lovers, with a terraforming deity getting to pull off all sorts of awesome tricks, like picking up a massive glob of lava and burning a mountain range down to size with it. Or that old classic, parting the sea, of course.

From Dust certainly looks like one of those innovative games which will hook you from the off, and hopefully it’ll live up to appearances. You can bag it now on Xbox Live for 1200 MS Points (a tenner), or on the PC (via Steam or other digital platforms) come August 16th.
