Good news for people who like to wear their underpants on top of their trousers… NCsoft has announced that its massively multiplayer superhero title, City of Heroes, will be going the free-to-play route later this year.
City of Heroes Freedom will offer some seven years of game content for free, although as is generally the case, a premium experience will also be available to those who continue to pay their subscription fee.
Those who play for free will get to progress to level 50 and have full access to Hero and Villain zones, whereas those who stay subscribed will get new VIP benefits, content and services.
New rewards will be made available on a monthly basis, with those forking out to play accumulating these simply for subscribing starting from next month on the run up to the launch of Freedom.
More content is also promised for the game, with the Issue 21: Convergence package launching alongside Freedom. This overhauls the starting experience for new players, boasts an improved character generation process, and a new co-op zone among other goodies.
Unique monthly content will also be produced such as “signature” story arcs which will be free for subscribers.
Both City of Heroes Freedom and Issue 21: Convergence will be out later this year, with the new game to be shown off for the first time at next month’s San Diego Comic-Con.
