id Software to return to roots with next Quake?

Cast your mind way back in the history of computer gaming, if you will, to a time when asteroids floated around a flat 2D black and white universe, with triangular ships blasting them and hyper-spacing out of danger.
Then come forward 17 years and you’ll arrive at that deathmatch-tastic time when id Software first released Quake, the shooter that really brought competitive gaming to the fore.
Quake was all about the multiplayer and the engine, really, although you may recall the single player game had a Cthulhu vibe to it, with Shub-Niggurath putting in an appearance at the end. Although he was the worst boss ever – the single player campaign was pretty rough and unfinished.
Well, it seems that there’s another Quake game on the cards – although not confirmed – and it could go back to the roots of Quake 1 (as opposed to the Stroggs, the futuristic race who followed in Quake 2).
John Carmack told EuroGamer: “We went from the Quake 2 and the Quake 4 Strogg universe. We are at least tossing around the possibilities of going back to the bizarre, mixed up Cthulhu-ish Quake 1 world and rebooting that direction.”
“We think that would be a more interesting direction than doing more Strogg stuff after Quake 4.”
We like the sound of this. If you can bring back the feel of Quake 1 deathmatch while you’re at it, John, that would be marvellous.
However, Carmack made it clear that: “Nothing is scheduled here, people are not building this.”
id’s next shooter title is Rage, out in October, but we’d imagine there will be another Quake game made at some point.
