2K Games has been showing off its new XCOM game at E3.

If you’re familiar with the XCOM franchise, which first emerged way back in 1994 courtesy of Microprose, the games involves an earth defence force fighting invading aliens in a large-scale tactical global conflict.

This XCOM reboot plans to go back in time to explore the origins of the agency in the early sixties, with the same overarching campaign and tactical squad play, but this time from a first-person perspective – adding a shooter element.

That might seem like heresy to hardcore strategy fans, but we rather like the look of this one. Take a peek at the E3 trailer for yourself here.

Developer 2K Marin is still keeping all the core elements here, the large-scale philosophy, forcing the player to choose which of many incidents to respond to, and all the discovering the unknown facts about the aliens and research side of the XCOM experience.

As far as we’re concerned, this is one we’re definitely looking forward to, although it’s the sort of epic undertaking which could suffer from a good deal of bugs (of the software, not alien variety).

Hopefully they’ll get time to polish it all up nicely before XCOM is released in the spring of 2012 on PC, PS3 and Xbox.
