If you’ve not been following the E3 games show, then you might have missed the unveiling of the sequel to the Wii.

Nintendo’s Wii U, as it’s called, features a 6 inch touchscreen tablet hybrid controller, HD graphics, and a line-up of more core games to attract not just casual gamers this time around.

And one of those titles might be Aliens: Colonial Marines, as Sega has just announced that the upcoming shooter for next year is being prototyped and considered for Nintendo’s Wii sequel.

Randy Pitchford, President of developer Gearbox Software, commented: “We are extremely thrilled about the potential of the Nintendo Wii U and are honoured to be a part of the earliest efforts for research and development on the platform with the Aliens: Colonial Marines project that is so perfectly matched with the platform’s unique and exciting new capabilities.”

A man who clearly doesn’t believe in pausing for breath when he speaks. Anyway, Aliens: Colonial Marines was announced for a spring 2012 target release at E3, and it’s a squad-based first-person shooter set after the events of Aliens.

Think Xenomorphs and claustrophobic environments on the USS Sulaco (along with the surface of LV-426 and Hadley’s Hope), weapons inspired by the film and co-operative gameplay.

It all sounds good, and if they get the Wii U game confirmed, we’d imagine the touchscreen controller as the iron sight for the gun should be a pretty cool feature, adding atmosphere to a premise which already drips with it.
