Unpublished novelists take note.

Publisher Angry Robot has announced that it will accept unsolicited manuscripts from writers not represented by agents during March 2011, for consideration for possible publication. Calling it Open Door Month, the publisher says that if the March period of open submissions is successful, it will consider opening similar periods in the future.

Angry Robot publishes fantasy, science fiction, horror and urban or modern fantasy, according to its online submissions page, and is interested in seeing manuscripts from all sub-genres in those areas of fiction. It is especially enthusiastic about seeing manuscripts which mix genres.

The publisher is soliciting novel manuscripts only, and is not interested in novellas, short stories or non-fiction at present. It also emphasizes on its submissions page that its intended audience is adults. Accordingly, it is not looking for manuscripts aimed at a teenage or YA audience.

Angry Robot is interested in submissions from writers who are interested in selling rights for publication in all the regions in which it publishes, which includes the UK, the US and Australia. Besides print editions, the publisher also offers e-book and audio versions of its publications.

Speaking as a writer searching for a publisher, that’s a really great idea. So many publishers won’t talk to you without you first having an agent (for understandable reasons, but it’s still frustrating) that holding a “doors are open” month like that is a welcome change.

Now to get that final draft ready for March…

Many thanks for this timely post read through Sfchronicles which I just registered for. I usually get to read posts like this a day after they close for submissions, but this time I be lucky … It’s an omen.

  3. Ian,
do not ever give up, I landed lucky and never actually submitted a script, but did write an inpromptu email with my web page as the promoter, and perhaps being right up front…

the email flew across the ‘pond’ to the good old USA and now a pre release book isthere.http://sbpra.com/andrewdaviddoyle
