Sir Terry Pratchett, the fantasy writer best known for his Discworld series, was named a winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Galaxy National Book Awards on 10 November.

This is the first year that the Outstanding Achievement Award was given as part of the industry group’s awards. Winners of the awards, which also include books in several categories as well as categories for writers, are chosen by members of the Galaxy National Book Awards Academy. The Academy consists of buyers for retail chains, independent booksellers, wholesalers and trade press columnists.

UK authors as well as non-British nationals who hold a British passport or who have lived in Great Britain or Northern Ireland for at least two years are eligible for the awards.

Also receiving an Outstanding Achievement Award, which is meant to recognize a British author whose body of work has been acclaimed by both readers and critics, who have a faithful following for their work and who are still writing and publishing on a regular basis, was novelist Martin Amis.
