Blizzard has announced that the next expansion for its MMORPG juggernaut will be arriving on December 7th.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will be the third expansion for the game, the first being The Burning Crusade (which introduced the Outland), which was followed by Wrath of the Lich King (which brought forth the chilly continent of Northrend).

Cataclysm introduces a new idea, a reshaping of the current lands of the original Azeroth, with once familiar areas being devastated by the return of the dragon, Deathwing the Destroyer. These well known places will then be filled with new adventures, challenging players as they level up to the new maximum cap of 85.

Expect a slew of new quests (low and mid-level quests will also be redesigned, not just the high level ones), dungeons, raid content, battlegrounds, tweaks to talents, along with two fresh races: The Worgen and Goblins for the Alliance and Horde respectively.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and Co-Founder of Blizzard, commented: “Cataclysm includes the best content we’ve ever created for World of Warcraft. It’s not just an expansion but a re-creation of much of the original Azeroth, complete with epic new high-level adventures for current players and a redesigned levelling experience for those just starting out.”

As ever, a collector’s edition of the expansion will be available, which will cost a bit more and come with bonus items to make the other players envious (or that’s the theory, anyway).
