When Guillermo Del Toro vacated the director’s chair down at The Hobbit, most saw that as a big blow to the two-part movie epic scheduled to begin at the end of 2012.
And many wondered who on Earth would replace him. Well, it seems that according to Deadline New York, MGM has found a suitable replacement. Peter Jackson himself.
Sources close to Deadline, trusted sources no less, reckon that a deal is being negotiated with Jackson right now.
Of course, Jackson directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and would provide the safest pair of hands to guide The Hobbit through its current stormy waters (it has been faced with delay after delay).
With Peter Jackson signed up, the thinking is that MGM could be persuaded to open its wallet further for the films, as the company has hit some fiscal turbulence (as many have in this economic climate).
Naturally, this is all still hearsay, and both parties haven’t confirmed so much as a whisper officially. But the story certainly has a ring of truth about it, and will undoubtedly be much welcomed by Tolkien fans if it turns into reality.
