The Warlock of Firetop Mountain comes to the iPad
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain was the original Fighting Fantasy book that Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone penned together back in 1982.
We still remember getting it in our Christmas stocking – well, pillow case – that year, and being enthralled by it for days on end.
Even though it wasn’t the first choose-your-own-adventure style book we’d come across – that accolade went to Deadwood City, a wild west themed tome we’d discovered in the school library several years previous.
Anyway, unlike the rather obscure Deadwood, the Warlock was a massive hit, and now you can relive those nostalgic beast battling, dice rolling days on a certain fruity tablet.
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, and Deathtrap Dungeon, have both been released to the iTunes store, with iPad support.
You won’t need any dice or a pencil with the iPad version, as it’s all done on screen; shaking the dice is emulated by literally shaking the iPad (thanks to the built-in accelerometer).
It all sounds pretty cool, although the automation does mean you won’t be able to fudge combat, or indeed turn back to select a different option when you make a bad page turning decision (“I knew going West was a mistake…”).
The original illustrations are included with the text, along with digitally remastered versions.
More than 70 Fighting Fantasy titles have been published, and 14 million copies have been sold worldwide (of which we bought around 20).
