Aussiecon4 makes nominated works available to Hugo voters
In a bid to make votes for the Hugo awards more informed Aussiecon 4, this year’s Worldcon, along with the writers, artists and publishers with works nominated, are making a package available to Hugo voters that contains nearly all of the nominated works in electronic format. In past years, some of the nominated novels and stories have been made available to voters, but this is the first year that all the nominees for the four major written fiction categories, Best Novel, Best Novella, Best Novelette and Best Short Story, have been included at full length in the package.
Along with those, all the nominees in the Best Graphic Story, Best Related Work, and Best Fanzine are represented in the package by either the complete works, sample issues, or excerpts from the works nominated or links to those works. There is also work included by the Best Artist, Best Fan Artist and Best Fan Writer nominees and the nominees for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer.
The package looks to be a treasure trove of the best work in science fiction from last year. One of the most interesting things about it is that anyone purchasing either an attending or a supporting membership to Aussiecon 4, to be held in Melbourne from 2 to 6 September 2010, can get access to the voters package and is eligible to vote for the Awards. You don’t have to be a writer, or a publisher, or even be in attendance at the convention. In other words, you don’t have to come up with not only the attending membership fee, plus hotel rates, plus the cost of a trip to Australia to have a say in who will win one of the most prestigious awards in the science fiction world.
If this sounds like something you might be interested in looking into all the details, including a complete list of the works included in the package, are available on the Aussiecon4 website. If you are interested, it would probably be a good idea to investigate the possibilities soon. The voters package for this year’s Hugo nominees will only be available until 31 July 2010, at 23:59 Pacific Daylight Time.
Even if you aren’t interested in buying a membership to Aussiecon4, however, you haven’t been completely left out of the fun. The Aussiecon4 website also has links to two of the works nominated for Best Novella and to all the Best Novelette and Best Short Story nominees. In addition, there are links there to samples of three of the Best Graphic Story Nominees and to all the Best Semiprozines nominated and to all but one of the Best Fanzine nominees. All of these can be read even if you aren’t inclined to purchase a membership to the convention.
