No Survival for Survivors
The BBC have decided to not to commission a season three for Survivors.
Despite peak audience figures of 5.1 million, the BBC has decided – for some reason – that it isn’t popular enough to invest in.
Survivors as a series was a remake of the 1970′s series by Terry Nation – perhaps more famous for creating Blake’s 7 – and it has to be said, was one of the more gripping dramas the BBC has produced in recent years.
Absolving itself of the usual mindlessness that has plagued other apocalyptic storylines (why do virus outbreaks normally result in people turning into zombies?!), it instead focused on the psychological needs of the characters, not least that of how to survive.
The first season was well-received, but it seems ratings were lost for the second, promoting the BBC to review the series.
While it did suffer inevitable criticisms for flaws in the plot and character development, these were forgivable considering the general strength of the series.
However, whatever our feelings, it looks like we’ve seen the last of Abby and the family – and yet another science fiction TV series is consigned ignobly to the long list of cancelled runs.
