Most internet users may have noticed the crop circle and UFO image on the Goggle homepage yesterday but what is its significance? Well the upon closer inspection the crop circle spells out Google, so is that it!

The more diligent investigator would have noticed that on the Google Twitter account there was also a posting it read like this: map reference 51.327629, -0.5616088, put this into Google and it turns out to be the map reference for Horsell in Surrey.

Horsell was used by HG Wells in his novel “War of the Worlds” as the landing spot for the first UFO and it also just happens to be the 143rd anniversary of the great writer’s birth.

Therefore, this is classic viral campaign launched by Google and that proves have valuable viral marketing could be to an organisation, provided a little thought has gone into it.
